Since 1988, Second Chance Thrift Shop has been a vital part of the Summerville community – providing a second life for donated items and a second chance for those in need through our Community Support Awards. In 2024 alone, we awarded $230,000 to local nonprofits thanks to the dedication of our volunteers, shoppers, and supporters.
Now, we’re looking for passionate, community-minded individuals to help lead us into the future.
About Second Chance
We’re an all-volunteer nonprofit organization that turns donated clothing, household goods, and accessories into funding for local charities. With the help of over 90 dedicated volunteers, our store is a welcoming place to shop, donate, and serve. Every item donated, every hour volunteered, and every purchase made directly supports those most in need in our community.
What Does the Board Do?
Our Board of Directors plays a crucial role in the vision, operations, and overall success of Second Chance. As a board member, you’ll:
- Guide the vision and planning of the organization
- Help ensure financial and operational health
- Be familiar with day-to-day store operations
- Contribute to or manage a key shop area or function (examples include merchandising, vintage research, jewelry, financial records, volunteer coordination, scheduling, etc.)
- Serve on at least one committee (volunteer appreciation, recruitment, community liaison, awards, finance, or procurement)
- Attend at least 10 board meetings per year
- Participate in volunteer appreciation and award ceremonies
- Represent Second Chance with goodwill and enthusiasm to our volunteers, shoppers, and community
- Commit to a 3-year term
