VOLUNTEERS ARE THE HEART OF SECOND CHANCE!
Second Chance is run by a volunteer staff of dedicated community members, and there is a space for you. The following are brief descriptions of the volunteer opportunities available in our retail shop and donation center.
CLEANING: These banishers of dust and grime keep the retail shop and donation processing area sparkling. Duties include cleaning bathrooms (there are 3), vacuuming, dusting, and cleaning the front windows. Shifts for this group are available 8 am-10 am, Monday-Friday.
DONATION PROCESSING: Volunteers in this position are responsible for all the donated items in the shop, including sorting, tagging, pricing, and storing them. Volunteers must be able to stand and move around in this area and lift items weighing up to 20 pounds. Donation processing is located in unit # 222, just two doors from the shop.
FRONT DESK/RETAIL SHOP: Front Desk volunteers are the face of Second Chance Thrift Shop. They take care of our fabulous customers by greeting shoppers, answering questions on the phone, processing customer purchases, taking payments, assisting shoppers as needed, and maintaining the tidiness of the shop.
FUN WITH TOOLS & LADDERS: Do you like to change light bulbs? Put racks together? Move stuff around? Fix stuff? Install shelves? Change air filters? Then, this is your golden opportunity. There is always work to be done between the retail shop and the donation center.
IRONING: This is as easy as it sounds. You pick it up, take it home, iron it, and return it to Donation Processing. You can iron in person in the Donation Processing Center if you prefer to join the fun. Second Chance has a reputation for quality items that look great, and ironing is part of the magic.
MERCHANDISING: Maintaining the overall appearance of the displays is this creative group's mission. Rack top displays, storefront windows, store organization, and ever-changing themes keep this group busy. These volunteers also handle restocking the shop daily.
SOCIAL MEDIA: Social media is a never-ending story. Even though we've been in business for over 30 years, we are still one of the best-kept secrets in Summerville. If you want a project to get your creative juices flowing, this is your place. Facebook videos and Instagram reels is an area we'd love to explore!
STORAGE BIN RUNNER: Requirements for this work include strong arms and a truck. The love of stacking, unstacking, and moving storage bins is a plus. These volunteers work with the Donation Processing group, and the schedule is often flexible.
TESTER: Toys, CD players, small appliances, lamps, lighted decorations, and anything else with a plug or batteries gets tested before heading to the shop floor. Do you need another reason to be part of this remarkable team? Well, they have their own table in the Donation Processing Center!
VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION/PROGRAM: Taking care of our fabulous volunteers is the goal of this position. Responsibilities of this position include maintaining volunteer contact information, scheduling, recruitment, and thanking volunteers. This group works with all other areas in Second Chance to meet our volunteers' needs.
